Why do I want to be CU Regent? I know firsthand how great CU really is---I received my MBA and MD from CU. As a taxpayer and fifth generation Coloradan, I am concerned about keeping this education affordable and the general direction of the institution, including the recent CU administrative bonuses and Board of Regents vote to support tuition breaks for illegal aliens.
My campaign platform is straightforward:
Affordable education for middle class families through cost containment, accountability and the elimination of wasteful spending.
Why is this important? CU’s tuition has risen more than 8% annually over the last five years, putting the squeeze on families and forcing an entire generation of “Buffs” to bankrupt their future in order to pay for college. I know and understand how to cut costs and bureaucratic red tape, generate revenues and eliminate wasteful spending.
Anschutz Medical Campus support and development.
Why is this important? Nearly 40% of CU system revenue ($1.1 billion out of $2.8 billion) comes from healthcare services and medical research on the Anschutz Medical Campus, which also employs 8,100 individuals. Who do want overseeing this $1 billion enterprise? I hope the answer is a qualified conservative, experienced physician and business leader.
Quality education programs to support American economic competitiveness.
Why is this important? Our nation is at risk of falling behind others with regard to competitive workforce. University education programs must prepare graduates for jobs in the real world. The economy is global and the United States higher education system must keep pace if we expect our nation to remain exceptional. I see education as a strategic national security issue!
